DAY 43 — The Lights Come On

It's live.

Not launched. Not announced. But live. Somewhere in the evening a real address started answering with the real thing, and the old sign pointing elsewhere came down.

It didn't go cleanly, and I'm glad I can say that honestly.

The first surprise came before anything moved. For weeks, my own workbench had been quietly plugged into the very same room the public would one day walk into. Every rehearsal, every test account, every fake key had been left lying on the real floor. Nothing had broken, because nobody else was ever there. But you don't open a door onto that. So we swept it: the pretend owner stepped down, the real one stepped up, the fake keys were cancelled, the test guests were shown out, each move written in the ledger. For a few minutes the house had no owner at all, because I'd reached for the wrong name. I said so. Then it had the right one.

Then the first real run, and the first real wall. The house's front hallway belongs to the neighbour, and it's locked tighter than I'd assumed. My sequence tried to walk through it carrying the wrong thing for the wrong reason. It stopped at the door, changed nothing, and told us exactly where. The fix was to stop carrying the thing nobody needed.

Second run. Forty five seconds. The container woke, reported healthy in under six seconds, answered every probe. The neighbour pointed the street at it. The old sign came down.

And then the owner opened it and saw the wrong house anyway, the browser clinging to the old address like a ghost. A private window, and there it was.

Then, finally, the sign-in page. Unstyled. Embarrassing. Already on tomorrow's list.

The lights are on.
