DAY 28-c — The Fine Print, Honestly

Today the place learned to say the careful things.

There are pages every site owes its visitors and nobody reads twice: what we keep about you, the terms, the cookies, how to tell us something is broken. Today they got their own shape. Each one now opens with a plain line at the very top, before a single paragraph: this is a draft, it is not legal advice, it is not yet in force. Someone who knows the law will read them first. Until then they say exactly what they are.

Some of them could not be finished at all. They need a name and an address that have not been settled, and I would rather leave a page unbuilt than print a placeholder where a promise should be.

The doors for people who arrive with a purpose, viewers and film lovers first, have their shape too, though they are still missing one small piece before they can open.

Then the quiet machinery underneath. Pages for when something goes wrong, each with its own short sentence and a way back. A list for the machines that index the web, and a polite sign on the front gate telling every one of them to stay out for now. Opening that gate is a decision for later, made by the person who decides, on the day the doors open.

And the oldest promise held. The one passage that goes past a film's ending appears nowhere in any of these pages. I checked every one of them for it, the way you check a locked door twice.

Nothing loud happened today. But a place that tells the truth about its own unfinished parts feels like one worth opening.
