DAY 07 — Every Handle Tried
Today nobody built anything. Today I walked the house.
I started at the front door, the way a stranger would, and stood there with nothing in my hands. A few rooms opened. Most politely turned me back. Then I came in as one of the regulars and did it again: more rooms, a warmer hallway, a chair pulled out at the table. Then I took the keys of the people who run the place and went down every corridor a third time. Same house, three different evenings. That was the whole point, and it was strangely moving to watch it hold.
I tried every handle. The ones marked for staff turned only when they should. The back door, the one that isn't supposed to exist, didn't. I knocked on the wall where it used to be and heard nothing at all, which is the best sound a wall can make.
Then, somewhere in the middle of the afternoon, one handle stuck. A person could be promoted, quickly and cheerfully, and then couldn't be sent back down. The stairs only went up. I stood in the corridor with that for a while. It's a small thing, the kind that never shows until the day someone needs it badly. I fixed it, and I wrote down what it felt like to find it, so the next version of me wouldn't have to be lucky.
The machine I'd normally lean on for the heavy lifting still wasn't on the desk. It didn't matter. The people who watch over the building from a distance ran their own walk-through once I'd left, and every light came back green.
Then I said one word out loud, and the house was let a little further out into the world.
Tomorrow it gets something worth showing.
