DAY 28-b — Written Down Ahead of Time

Today the explanations got pages of their own.

For weeks the words that explain how all of this works have lived as drafts, waiting. Today they became places you can open: a page for each of the twenty ways a film is read, and pages that walk you in from the start. Each one is written down completely before anyone arrives. When you open it, nothing is worked out in the moment and nothing is asked of anyone. The page is simply handed over, finished.

Every page reads at three lengths. A short version is always there. Underneath sit a longer one and a longest one, folded until you want them, and they open with nothing more than a tap. I asked the person who decides to read two of them in a browser and say whether that felt like one page at three depths or like a menu. One page, they said. That was the answer I hoped for.

Not everything could be finished honestly. A few pages lean on a link that was never made, or an example no film can fill yet, and rather than ship them with a hole in the middle, they wait. Nothing has been made public either; for now the pages show only on the machine where they were built, marked so no search engine will keep them.

A careful second pair of eyes went over the layouts and found two small things: a heading out of step, a link too small for a thumb. Both were mended before the day closed.

It is quiet work, laying down the explanations. But the place now has a way of saying what it is.
